Spanking New - Artful Trinkets

The Age

Saturday July 19, 2003

Janice Breen Burns

There is no purer tool of personal expression than a limited-edition or - better still - one-off, handmade trinket or frock. In this era of mass production, global branding and the pervasive ``sameness" of fashion from one year and continent to the next, an original brooch, or dress, or tiara, for that matter, made with passion especially for you (or, at the very worst, replicated for a like-minded few) is suddenly, immeasurably, rare and precious. (And so terribly fashionable.)

Little wonder that artists andcraftsmen proliferate through Melbourne's honeycomb of miniscule studios after every new flush oftertiary art graduations.

There are so many young, impassioned arty-crafty types now bent over their work (products of overripe imaginations charged with three solid years of art lectures and pracs), it is genuinely possible to dress and drape yourself, hairline to hem, in clothing and trinkets unlike any in the world.
